A mere 90 minutes north of our studio, 的 vibrant 和 historical city of Portland is a favorite summer destination with great restaurants, bustling street life, 和 many cultural institutions. 的 unseasonably warm November weather was an added bonus that made our excursions 和 dinner treks even more memorable.

This is 的 third in our series of MTS博客s about samplers we have conserved from 的 新罕布什尔州历史学会. 莎拉’s sampler is a simple upper 和 lowercase alphabet stitched with silk thread 在一个piece of undyed linen. She stitched only 的 numerals 1 through 4 but spent quite a bit of time perfecting 的 decorative floral border--perhaps nine- or ten-year-old 莎拉 adored flowers more than numbers. According to 的 NHHS digital catalog, 莎拉 Folsom Cochran lived from 1811 和 1844 in Pembroke 和 Epson, 新罕布什尔. Although she did not record 的 date she made her sampler, she did include her exact birthday as August 26th, 1811. So happy 204th birthday anniversary 莎拉! In 的 early 19th century, all 的 dyes used to color 莎拉’s bright silks would have been made from natural substances like madder for pinks 和 reds, 和 indigo or woad for blues. 嘛 ny natural dyes, 和 的 natural fibers of silk 和 linen, slowly degrade over time, losing 的ir intensity 和 saturation as a result of things like light 和 heat. However 莎拉's sampler is almost 的 same color on 的 front as on 的 back, indicating that it has been well cared for. We know that 莎拉's sampler was once framed because it came to 博物馆纺织服务 glued onto an acidic board. Moisture in 的 top-left corner had caused soil 和 discoloration to migrate, but fortunately not 的 dyes. Prior to cleaning, Conservator Cara Jordan removed as much of 的 cardboard 和 adhesive residue from 的 reverse with mechanical action. Cataloging 和 documenting 的 objects, clothing, 和 personal effects in 的 military collection of 嘛 x W. Krell feels a bit like getting to know 的 man himself, which is a pleasure for everyone at MTS. Born on September 13th, 1922, Krell rose to 的 rank of 第一中尉 before 的 end of World War II. He 和 his wife Phyllis J. Krell raised a family in Kingsport, TN. 菲利斯去世后，他 在密歇根州的沙勒沃市度过了他的最后几年。  嘛 x W. By doing so we will help preserve 的m so 的 coming generations can enjoy getting to know 嘛 x Krell 和 his military 和 humanitarian efforts in World War II.
